On this day we are celebrating the life of Roberta Mary Carter. Roberta was born on January 13, 1935 to her parents, Josephine Nelson and Clifton Nelson in Grosse Tete, Lousiana. She was the youngest of three children, her wonderful sister Leona Barfield who proceded her in death and her beloved brother Albert Nelson.
Roberta migrated with her family to Chicago at a very young age. She attended Corliss Elementary School and graduated from Carver High School. Roberta also attended Chicago Teacher’s College (Chicago State University).
Roberta married Billy Carter and from that union their children Anthony and Kimberly were conceived.
Roberta worked many years for Western Electric while in Chicago before relocating with them in Allentown, PA., where she continued her career until retirement.
Roberta had many great loves, a few being her family, her friends, and traveling. She loved attending family gatherings and remaining connected to distant relatives. Roberta was an avid reader and felt that everyone should be able to visit the various destinations that they read about in books. She was also a huge movie buff who was interested not just in the viewing of a film, but also in the direction, production, actors and any Hollywood gossip surrounding the film.
Roberta received Christ at a very early age. She was a dedicated Catholic who attended services weekly. She also worked for Catholic Charities as well as supported a host of charities. Roberta believed that helping others was the greatest gift. She definitely believed that giving was far better than receiving.
