Mrs. Doris Louise Valentine

Born Into Time: March 18, 1919
Born Into Eternity: February 20, 2017

Doris Louise Valentine was born, March 18, 1919, at St. Luke Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. She was the fourth of six children who blessed the marriage of Julia Theresa Harris and Herbert Bartlett Webb of Jamaica, British West Indies.

After graduating from Englewood High School, Doris pursued some college courses and developed a lifelong love of reading. She married Cyril J. Valentine in December 1941 in Chicago, and bore two children, Julian and Sylvia. She faithfully served as an organist and loyal member of St. Matthew African Orthodox Church, and together they instilled in their children the values of faith, culture and home life.

Doris was a long-time employee of the United States government. First, employed by the Treasury Department of Savings Bonds and later the Internal Revenue Service where she retired in the 1983. She continued to work in a part-time capacity for a physician’s office over ten years after retirement. She faithfully attended St. Mark United Methodist Church and enjoyed the fellowship and travel activities of Partners In Retirement. Her favorite activity was line dancing when she could do it.

A quiet woman of strength, doting mother and loving grandmother, Doris dedicated most of her time to nurturing and caring for her family. The family moved to the Chatham neighborhood in 1955, and she always focused on homemaking and gardening which became her trademark in the neighborhood. Her good health and strength allowed her to live independently in her home at 97 years young.

God answered her prayers to be with her grandchildren, Meredith and Corey Sears and her great grandchildren in Austin, Texas during her final stages of a terminal illness. Because of the excellent care of her hospice teams, she departed this world February 20, 2017 in peace and without pain surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren, and grandniece Elysee Isles. She was preceded in death by her husband Cyril, and siblings, Herbert “Barry” Webb, Leila “Lynn” Valentine Hicks, Kenneth Webb, Eurith Harper and Earl “Butch” Webb. Leaving memories with children Julian Valentine and Sylvia Rainey, granddaughter Megan Valentine, beloved great grandchildren Simone Sears, Bianca Benee Sears, and Benjamin Sears; nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
